MyStyle Platform Upgrades Image Quality Across All Sites
Last week we launched a new version of the MyStyle Platform customizer application that has increased image quality across the board. The new version uses some additional processes to smooth out JPG and PNG images for a much smoother look, eliminating "jagged" edges of most all images - especially while being rotated or sized to positions that would previously leave images very jagged looking. The print quality has always been high, so this mainly effects what people see...

Some people were surprised to hear they changed the size of the connector, though a similar change was made to the Macbook connector not too long ago. The new phone is sure to set a new benchmark for the smart phone world, as always.

Google Trends Widget is a Handy Search Trending Tool
The Google trends widget can be a handy little tool to obeserve major trends in search traffic. What this allows one to do is observe when certain search terms show recent spikes in activity, which can be a great indicator of what search terms to optimize for.
For example, try it out here with the term "Batman" with the time period set to "1 Year":

High Performance PC Purchasing - Comparing and Choosing the Processor
Buying a performance PC is way more confusing than it used to be, or needs to be, even for techies. Dual Cores... Quad Cores... Quint Cores... Intel... i7 Dual... i5 Quad... i5 Dual.. i7 Quad... AMD... Wait, 8 cores? Does that even work for most software? Enough already!
A simple list in order of awesome power would be nice... Ah yes, he' we ar':

Cross Domain Policy Issues with Flash loading remote data from Amazon s3 cloud storage
Bug / Issue:
When Flash is loading images or other certain data from Amazon S3 (Cloud Storage), cross domain policy errors prevent the images from loading.
Even when force-loading an open policy file in your Amazon bucket that you are loading from, you may get an error like this, where Amazon's cross domain policy will override your own:
"Warning: Domain s3.amazonaws.com does not specify a meta-policy. Applying default meta-policy 'master-only&...

Flash Rumors Debunked - Adobe Releases Official Flash and Air Roadmap
It's been a long time since the rumors that "Apple is killing Flash and Adobe is going to drop it", or, "HTML5 is replacing Flash", or "Flash is dead", yada, yada, yada- all complete crap speculation and rumors from people who probably watched YouTube videos in Flash within 24 hours prior to making the naive statements, and probably the same people who said 10 years ago "Facebook is a fad." (haha)I've debated this with people for YEARS now, and finally, I'm happy to say we don't have to de...

The New Internet and Social Media Statistics - facebook and more
It used to be this mysterious thing growing rapidly, "Social Media" was all the buzz, and some people even called it a Fad (haha). Now with sites like Facebook having more users than any country has people (except 2), 1 in 9 people on the Planet having Facebook on average, and Social users being 3 times more likely to convert into a sale on a website, it's proven itself to be a more effective side of using the web for almost everyone - from high school students to business marketing departments....

Lytro Camera Innovates Photography with Flash
It's always cool to see new technology innovate things that haven't changed in years. Lytro has created a new type of photograph that captures more (all) of the light field, making for very vivid pictures with great depth and allowing the image to be focused interactively after the photo has been taken with their new camera. Since it does this is one snap, there is no need to focus the camera, and there is no delay from when you click the button. The coolest feature, is that the viewe...

Protests Result from US Government Attempting to Pass Internet Censorship
Today is the biggest internet protest in history as a result of congress preparing to vote in favor of SOPA/PIPA - a bill that allows the USA to censor the internet in a similar way to China. Though this seems to be a direct violation of the first amendment, the most absolute protector of free speech, it has more than enough support to pass. So, sites across the internet, including some of the biggest sites in existence, are striking by blacking out either their logo (ex: Google) or ...

Facebook images and profile pics not showing - Yet Another issue in the facebook Meltdown
Today (Oct 4, 2011) I noticed that Facebook images are not showing up for most all profile images and some other images throughout the site as well. No, there is not something wrong with your computer or internet connection. It is definitely a problem on facebook's end. Loading an image directly, I get an error response from their server(s):Service UnavailableThe server is temporarily unable to service your request. Please try again later. CSS Z-index Not Working to Order Depth Position of DIV
This drove me crazy once or twice. Sometimes backgrounds and images don't play nice and overlap eachother in unintended ways. So, you want to set the depth-order to fix this, with the z-index CSS property. It seems simple enough. Z-index: 10 is "behind" Z-index: 20 is "behind" Z-index: 50 and so on. But, give it a shot and it frequently has no effect whatsoever and just seems to not work. Well, there is just one tidbit of information missing in this equation:To get Z-Index...

Flash FLVPlayback Video Player Takes Over Screen When in Full Screen Mode
The FLVPlayback component in Flash is a nice quick and easy way to get video into a Flash movie. Whether your work flow calls for compiling the movie directly for web, or you're loading it into a larger AS3 application, using Flash to embed the video in the SWF saves time over pure code options. This is where a strange default behavior happens: when you go into Full Screen Mode the movie takes over the entire screen, and often shows up completely black. Yikes. The solutio...

Text Formatting and Design: Surefire Simple Typography Basics
Having a Content Management system like OG CMS is great - it allows you edit your own content whenever you want, quickly and easily. But, sometimes you make a page and it just doesn't look good like all the cool websites you see, and thus the question I get all the time:"How do I make the content (the text) look good?"What you want if you're a business or anything that you want to be looked at and considered "professional", "trustworthy", and "official". The look of real businesses h...

Sticker Power! Are Balance Bracelets a Hoax? Does it Matter?
Recently I was fascinated with what I was sure was a fake gimmick product- the Power Balance bracelets. My friend was wearing one a while back and I told him "You must be crazy if you think that sticker gives you some kind of magical powers." He was pretty sincere when he said "No, but it really seems to help my balance." I laughed at him but not too long later I saw a booth at a fair selling them left and right with the whole "balance on one foot while I push your arm down" de...

IE8 Flash Problems with Stage Size and Events (aka Refresh Bug)
Rant Ugh, who hates IE? I do. Can't Microsoft assign like 3,700 developers to fix it so it works as well as FireFox? Or maybe the problem is that's what they've done, rather than having it fixed by 1 developer who know WTF is going on? Oh well.
Anyway... Another suggestion for another solution: Background After much frustration with inconsistencies between running flash in IE8 for the first time, vs after a refresh (cached version) I've settled on the following method rather th...

FlashDevelop Trace Not Working - Not Showing Anything in Output Window
This seems to be a common problem where FlashDevelop stops tracing properly, and does not show anything in the output window beyond the build output. There are a few reasons that might cause this but the most common solutions to fix this are as follows (from my experience):1) Normal FlashPlayer Versions Do Not WorkIf you've done a flash player update recently and now trace has stopped working, it's almost definitely because you need the DEBUGGER version of the flash player installed. ...

Bravo, Disqus Commenting System
I noticed the new commenting system on TechCrunch.com powered by Disqus. I have to say from a user interface designer point of view that I really like the simplicity and great usability of the system. It promotes commenting in organized fashion and shows new posts in real time, which can be almost like a chat room for a hot topic with updates rolling in. They've got a real low barrier for users to comment since you can comment without going through all the usual annoying motions...

Windows Vista Remote Desktop (RDP/RDC) - Enabling with Hack
So, as you probably know, Windows Vista HAS REMOTE DESKTOP, it's just hidden away and disabled to make you need to buy an upgraded version like Business or Ultimate. Isn't that just dandy? Well screw that!
To enable Remote Desktop in Windows Vista there are only really 3 things you need to do on the Vista computer(s).
1) Run a batch (right click and run as administrator) program that will hack your windows registry and terminal services (termsrv...

I've Never Let School Interfere With My Education (Mark Twain)
Mark Twain had a million clever little sayings; one of them that I've grown to appreciate... "I've Never Let School Interfere With My Education." Especially in web technology, you frequently can't find the answers that you need in school. I asked a number of professors when I was in college an impossible short answer question, "how do I succeed in business online." I got a myriad of answers, but the best one was "If I knew that I wouldn't be here right now, would I?" The truth ...
